A Taste of Jazz 7:00pm - 9:30pm | Bailey Contemporary Arts, 41 NE 1st Street

Join us for a new kind of combo! A Taste of Jazz at Bailey Contemporary Arts will feature entertaining and educational encounters with the musical genre, accompanied by wine tastings located in an intimate art gallery setting. The introduction to jazz series will showcase the musicians of the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band, under the direction of Martin Hand.

The sessions will take place from 7-9 pm on March 7, April 4, May 2, June 6, July 11 (due to the July 4th Holiday, the July event is the second Thursday), August 1, September 5, 2019. Tickets $10-$20 per event.

“A Taste of Jazz is a fun way to learn more about the celebrated musical genre without feeling intimidated or overwhelmed,” said Jody Leshinsky, Cultural Venues Programming Manager. “So many people want to learn more about this original American art form but do not know where to begin. We created this event series for them! And by adding wine tastings from local vendors, it will truly become a fun-filled social event.”

The Gold Coast Jazz Society has been a major presenter of jazz concerts, jazz education and jazz outreach programs in Broward County since 1992. They have maintained and preserved the heritage of jazz by presenting the music celebrating jazz's evolution over the past 100 years.

Building a Feminist Archive: Cuban Women Photographers in the U.S. 6:00pm - 8:00pm | Bailey Contemporary Arts, 41 NE 1st Street

Building a Feminist Archive: Cuban Women Photographers in the US shows the varied contributions of Cuban women artists living and working in the United States since the seventies when the concept of a collective “Latino” identity became crucial. It is curated by Aldeide Delgado, founder and director of Women Photographers International Archive (WOPHA). The artists in the exhibition started to attend art schools and found themselves inspired by and responding to the social movements of their time. They created new images of their communities and examined pluricultural experiences challenging the notion of being exclusively Cuban or American. This show reveals artwork rarely seen or exhibited, and at the same time promotes reflection on the social, cultural and political identities of Cuban Women Artists in the United States within the current discussion of Latinx art.

Featured Artists: Aurora de Armendi, Carlotta Boettcher, María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Coco Fusco, Nereida García Ferraz, Silvia Lizama, María Martínez-Cañas, Yali Romagoza, Gladys Triana, and Juana Valdés.

Opening Reception: December 6, 6pm-10pm | FREE

Palimpsest by Alicia Rodriguez Exhibition Opening Reception 6:00pm - 10:00pm | Bailey Contemporary Arts, 41 NE 1st Street

A word that describes a document that has the marks of previous writings, Palimpsest is a testimony featuring different layers where previous marks remain and that can be seen beneath the surface, is used by Alicia Rodriguez to define this body of work. This exhibition features large-format mixed media paintings - monochromatic at first look- that create a metaphoric connection between the tragic events taking place in her native country of Venezuela and Dante’s Inferno. Through detailed observation, the viewer discovers the different layers with multiple materials applied to each of the surfaces exhibited, each layer and each texture reflecting on the artist’s experiences as she faced political turmoil in her lifetime. Each painting is approached as a manuscript that has hold many stories, on the same page.

Opening Reception: December 6, 6pm-10pm | FREE
