Arboreal: Opening Reception 6:00pm - 10:00pm | Bailey Contemporary Arts, 41 NE 1st Street

Bailey Contemporary Arts
Presents the Arboreal Exhibition
A group exhibition of mixed media featuring the art of trees

Bailey Contemporary Arts (BaCA) in Pompano Beach is proud to present Arboreal, an exhibition inspired by the lives of trees and human interaction within a natural environment. The exhibit will be on view in the Central and East galleries from May 3, 2019 through June 28, 2019. There is an opening reception, free to the public, on Friday, May 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. during the Old Town Untapped event.

While grandiose trees easily catch our eye, this exhibition highlights the exquisite character of their unexpected and humble comrades. From preserved, pristine cherry blossoms encased in ice to A-bomb survivors in Hiroshima, trees and their parts continually school us on the process of growth, decay and resurrection.

“This exhibition features the vibrant hues of nature and the tremendous range of nature’s canopies,” said Phyllis Korab, Cultural Affairs Director. “The artists capture the essence of why we strive to preserve our natural environment.”

The lives of trees and humans are intertwined, with trees being the giver in this arguably unbalanced relationship. Trees provide oxygen, shelter, food, protection, among other things necessary for human survival. Though paradoxically underappreciated and worshiped, there is no denying trees have a profound impact on our psyche. This collection of painting, sculpture, installation, mixed-media, and photo-based work is a glimpse into how 12 divergent artists interpret and respond to trees, real and imagined.

Featured Artists: Kate Hawkes; Mario Marzan; Sammi Mclean; Elin O’Hara Slavick; Roger Boulay; Maria Britton; Ivan Santiago; Mike Dillow; Sharon Lee Hart; William Cordova; Izel Vargas; Carol Prusa; Nick Gilmore; Roberto Navarrette; and Susanne Slavick

Tamiami Trail Exhibition 10:00am - 6:00pm | Bailey Contemporary Arts, 41 NE 1st Street

Bailey Contemporary Arts (BaCA) presents Tamiami Trail: In the Beginning, an exhibition of original artworks by members of the Miami-based Tropical Botanic Artists collective. The exhibit will be on view in the West Gallery/Blooming Bean Coffee Roasters from April 5, 2019 through May 31, 2019. The free opening reception is Friday, April 5, 6pm-10pm during Old Town Untapped.

The botanical subjects were selected to mark the 100th anniversary in 2015 of the start of work on Tamiami Trail, a roadway begun in 1915 in Miami. Today it stretches across the Everglades from Miami to Naples and northward to Tampa, through areas that were largely wilderness a century ago. The exhibition’s more than 30 plant portraits depict species found then and now in multiple vegetation zones along the route. Due to human intervention and changes in water flow, some of the plants illustrated are rare or endangered, and their predominant locations may have shifted, but all persist in South Florida’s landscape.

“We invite our community to dive deep into the discerning talents of the artists capturing the essence of South Florida in plant form," said Phyllis Korab, Cultural Affairs Director. “Far beyond ‘flower painting,’ botanical artists show the fascinating and soul-stirring intersection of science and art.”

Presented with support from the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, the exhibition is the result of the artists’ collaboration with Dr. Evelyn Gaiser of Florida International University, who is principal investigator for the local Florida Coastal Everglades Long Term Ecological Research program.

Artists whose works are featured in the exhibition are Margie Bauer, Kristi Bettendorf, Beverly Borland, Silvia Bota, Marie Chaney, Susan Cumins, Jeanie Daniel Duck, Julio Figueroa, Pauline A Goldsmith, Leo Hernandez, Elsa Nadal, Carol Onstad, Laurie Richardson, Donna Torres and Jedda Wong.
