Opening Reception: Penta 6:00pm - 9:00pm | Bailey Contemporary Arts, 41 NE 1st Street

Pompano Beach’s Downtown can trace its renaissance to the opening of Bailey Contemporary Arts (BaCA) on April 16, 2014. In the five years since the ribbon cutting ceremony, the venue has been a catalyst for the City’s emerging cultural community and a key driver for local economic development. To celebrate this milestone, BaCA is showcasing the works of its resident artists, past and present, in an exhibition entitled “Penta”. The exhibition will be on display March 1-April 27, 2019. The opening event takes place March 1, 6-9 pm during Old Town Untapped with an anniversary party planned for April 5, 2019, during April’s Old Town Untapped. “The importance of Bailey Contemporary Arts cannot be underestimated,” said Mayor Rex Hardin. “This venue put the City’s emerging art scene in the spotlight with its creative exhibitions, support of emerging artists and a robust schedule of events and workshops. BaCA’s emergence fueled the success of the Old Town Untapped events and stimulated the economic development in the surrounding area. There is much to celebrate during this fifth anniversary, and we are very proud of all of the people who made this venue a success.” The venue, which still features key structural elements of the historic Bailey Hotel, houses two main galleries on the first floor, in addition to a gallery within the very popular Blooming Bean Coffee Roasters. On the second floor, Artists in Residence (AiRs) have their own private work spaces to create. The AiRs community throughout the years has brought a unique collaborative spirit to the venue, which will be showcased during Penta. “We have assembled an outstanding collection of pieces from our current and previous artists in residence to celebrate our 5th anniversary,” said Phyllis Korab, Pompano Beach Cultural Affairs Director. “The exhibition will feature paintings, ceramics and installations that have been inspired by each artists’ unique interpretations of what five means to them. There is great symbolism behind the number five, so it will be fascinating to see how our artists reflect these influences.”

Join us for a new kind of combo! A Taste of Jazz at Bailey Contemporary Arts will feature entertaining and educational encounters with the musical genre, accompanied by wine tastings located in an intimate art gallery setting. The sessions will take place from 7-9 pm on March 7, April 4 and May 2, 2019. Tickets $10-$20 per event.

“A Taste of Jazz is a fun way to learn more about the celebrated musical genre without feeling intimidated or overwhelmed,” said Jody Leshinsky, Cultural Venues Programming Manager. “So many people want to learn more about this original American art form but do not know where to begin. We created this event series for them! And by adding wine tastings from local vendors, it will truly become a fun-filled social event.”

The Gold Coast Jazz Society has been a major presenter of jazz concerts, jazz education and jazz outreach programs in Broward County since 1992. They have maintained and preserved the heritage of jazz by presenting the music celebrating jazz's evolution over the past 100 years.

Session Topics:
March 7

What’s This Thing Called Jazz? - A jazz trio (guitar/vocals, bass and drums) will introduce you to the musical form called jazz. There is no better example of democracy than listening to a jazz ensemble. You will hear how an ensemble adheres to the overall framework and structure of a song yet provides their own spin on the music through improvisation.

Artist Talk: Florencia Clement de Grandprey 2:00pm - 3:00pm | Bailey Contemporary Arts, 41 NE 1st Street

Join us for an Artist Talk with Florencia Clement de Grandprey on Saturday, March 23 at 2:00pm at Bailey Contemporary Arts West Gallery - inside Blooming Bean Coffee Roasters. Meet the artist and learn about her inspiration and artistic process. This public program is organized in conjunction with her exhibition on view February 1 through March 30, 2019.

Born and raised in southern Spain, Florencia is the daughter of an American mother and a French/Italian father. A self-taught mixed media artist, her mission is to empower and inspire through positive and meaningful artwork. At the heart of her artwork is her desire to portray strong, elegant and confident men and women as a means to celebrate who we are and everything that makes us unique, as well as to aide in the healing of much of the suffering we experience throughout our lives.

Florencia combines her love of the classic masters with contemporary design flair to produce mixed media paintings by incorporating, up- cycling and repurposing materials that would otherwise be disposed of such as discontinued fabric and paper samples. The myriad of colors, textures, and mesmerizing patterns found in these samples inspires her choice of materials and reveals her main techniques: the first is painting on canvas with materials added to my painted figure; the second is painted directly on upholstery fabric, where the pattern of the fabric becomes intertwined with the image.
