Under the clothes is skin. Under the skin is sound. And her. The Works of Linda Behar, Raheleh Filsoofi and Sibel Koçabasi 10:00am - 6:00pm | Bailey Contemporary Arts, 41 NE 1st Street

What makes a woman, a woman? Bailey Contemporary Arts newest exhibit showcases three outstanding artists, Linda Behar, Sibel Koçabasi and Raheleh Filsoofi, who present thought-provoking perspectives on gender and a variety of social and political issues. Exploring the feminine, an array of questions arise about the perceptions and realities of being a woman. Is the identity of a woman a matter of choice, or is it a social construct? Is the content of femininity imposed by society, or is there some degree of buy-in by women themselves? What image remains of women in history, when the individual no longer has the option of forming it herself?

The artists, Americans who themselves each come from different cultural backgrounds outside the United States, hope to inspire viewers to think critically and foster a new dialogue on vital global issues regarding women.

Clay As Your Canvas: Lecture and Workshop 10:30am - 12:30pm | Bailey Contemporary Arts, 41 NE 1st Street

BaCA exhibited artist and noted professor, Raheleh T. Filsoofi will offer a 30-minute presentation on her dynamic work that incorporates clay and the medium of sound, followed by an hour-long workshop on transferring images to clay using various techniques such as sunscreen, lazertran and other unique and creative techniques that create unusual clay surfaces. The demonstration of various techniques will be on clay tiles using slips, underglazes, and engobes. Other techniques such as sgraffito, carving, texture making and brush painting will be also demonstrated.

All levels welcome! Class size limited to 20 students. ALL art materials will be supplied for you. Wear worry free clothing.

Raheleh Filsoofi synthesizes issues regarding society and the human condition from a personal perspective. She utilizes ancient and contemporary art media – ceramics, poetry, ambient sound and video – to make fundamental statements about perception and memory through a holistic sensory experience. Clay, the ancient medium of her Persian ancestry, is a source of pride and an outlet for metaphorical expression and visual poetry. Her initial academic training came in Iran, where she also completed several public and private commissions. She moved to the United States in 2003 and worked with several renowned American Ceramic artists on public art projects in Coral Springs and Miami. She received her MFA in ceramics from Florida Atlantic University in 2014, and is an active participant in juried art exhibitions both in Iran and the United States, including recently The International Fair Festival in Tehran, a solo exhibition at The Cultural Council of Palm Beach in Lake Worth, Florida, and ‘Artistically Speaking,’ a group exhibition of South Florida female artists at the Cornell Museum in Delray Beach, Florida. Filsoofi has received several awards including a Presidential Fellowship during her graduate studies at Florida Atlantic University. She also pursues a project to document traditional and contemporary artists in clay in Iran, supported in part by a Chastain-Johnston Middle East Grant from the FAU Peace Studies program, which she has presented to several international academic conventions and symposia.
